The Jane Austen Festival charity for 2017 – will again be – (they are so close to raising the funds they need that we are staying with them until they do)
The Forever Friends Appeal is the primary fundraising charity for the Royal United Hospital (RUH), Bath. We raise money for all wards and departments at the hospital, to fund equipment and facilities above and beyond that which can be provided by the finite budget of the NHS.
Spearheading the Appeal, is our major campaign – the RUH Cancer Care Campaign – which will help to fund the build of a pioneering new Cancer Centre at the RUH.
The current Oncology Department at the RUH is outdated and unfit for purpose. It was hurriedly erected in the 1940s to accommodate wounded service personnel from the Second World War, and was never intended as an Oncology Centre, or even a long-term facility of any kind. Now 70 years out of date, the Oncology Department is cramped, uncomfortable and lacks vital privacy at a very vulnerable time in many people’s lives.
The RUH has a catchment population of over 500,000 people from across B&NES, western Wiltshire and South Gloucestershire, with over 2200 new patients being diagnosed with cancer at the RUH every year. Recent statistics have shown that 1 in 2 people will now be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lifetime, and with these rising figures it is imperative that state-of-the-art Cancer Care is provided at the local, and not just national, level.
The new Cancer Centre at the RUH will take a holistic design approach to provide a ground-breaking facility, promoting a healing and therapeutic environment for our thousands of patients and their families. Not only will this allow our patients to be treated with appropriate space and privacy, protecting their dignity at an incredibly difficult time, but will also act as a model of care for other District General Hospitals around the UK.
In order to achieve this, The Forever Friends Appeal is raising a minimum target of £8.5 million. So far, with the help of the incredible generosity of our local community we have raised £7.1 million towards this goal. We still have a long way to go, but with the ongoing generosity of people such as all of you at the Jane Austen Festival, we step ever closer to transforming Cancer Care for thousands of patients in their time of need.
