Lacock was ‘Meryton’ in Pride & Prejudice and where Lydia and Kitty, ‘whose minds were more vacant than their sisters’, shopped for bonnets and hoped for attention from officers! In 1799 Austen wrote: ‘At Devizes we had a good dinner… asparagus and a lobster… some cheesecakes, so delightful… as to endear the town to us for a long time’. Cheesecake is still made in this endearing town! Guided minibus tour.
